Did you know that the JNP Memorial Beach Volleyball Tournament is, and has always been, completely volunteer-driven, and is a not-for-profit event?
This annual tournament is held in memory of Jason N. Pearson (J.N.P.) who was killed in a hit and run accident near Grand Bend on July 25th, 2009. In Jason's memory, all proceeds of this high energy, fun-filled tournament, are donated to the Bereaved Families of Ontario (Midwestern Region), as well as an annual scholarship fund at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Every year this not-for-profit sports event is planned, organized and executed exclusively by Jason’s amazing family and friends.
Through the valiant efforts of it's supporters, the JNP tournament has quickly become one of the most successful and dynamic volleyball events in southwestern Ontario, hosting people from all ages, backgrounds, and regions.
Our goal is to make the JNP tournament bigger and better every year, helping more families in our community. With your help, we can achieve this goal.
Jason was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. He grew up with loving parents, Barb and Carl and has a brother and sister-in-law, Dallas and Tricia and a sister, Danielle. Unfortunately, he passed away before he got to meet his brother-in-law Cory and his two nieces Summer and Sky.
After high school Jason moved around trying to find the right fit for him. He lived in Victoria, B.C and in Edmonton, AB and eventually found what he was looking for in Waterloo, ON. He went to school at Wilfred Laurier University where he studied Political Science and Anthropology. After university Jason started working for Manulife Financial in Waterloo. Jason excelled in school right from the start and really enjoyed learning and had a profound love of music. He was heavily involved in sports growing up in Saskatchewan including hockey, soccer, baseball, handball, football and lacrosse. He competed at the provincial level in multiple sports. He even traveled abroad to play football. He started playing volleyball in the local leagues shortly after he moved to Waterloo and it didn’t take too long before he was fully immersed in their volleyball community. He would spend most nights and almost every weekend at some sort of volleyball event. That community would eventually become his family away from home.
Jason’s lifelong passion was people. Jason was the type of guy who got along with everyone and had the ability to bring a random group of people together for some of the most memorable moments. The type of moments that when you got together with those people years later, you still talk and laugh about. The type of moments you never want to forget. He was more than that. Generous. Funny. Smart. Handsome. A great storyteller, with many stories to tell. Jason went out of his way to help anyone who asked for help and would do almost anything for a friend.
Jason was attending a Beach Volleyball event in Grand Bend, Ontario in July of 2009. It was during this event that Jason was killed in a hit and run on July 26th, 2009 at approximately 5 a.m. It was out of that tragic event that the JNP tournament was born. His volleyball family wanted to remember the good times so they organized and held the first JNP tournament that same year and have run it every year since in his honour. This is the kind of tournament that we know he would have loved to be at. A weekend of volleyball and music and friends, both new and old, all raising money for a great cause.
A HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers who make it possible for the JNP Volleyball Tournament to exist and be such a great success year after year.
All proceeds of this event go to charity, to help support our local community.
